Michael Burant

Michael Burant, Class of 2000
Football, Basketball, Wrestling, and Baseball
While at RCHS, Michael Burant was a standout athlete that lettered in 11 of the 12 eligible sports available at his time at Rockbridge County High School. During his football career Michael was a four-year letter winner as an Offensive Tackle, Defensive End, and Long Snapper. He was voted team Most Valuable Lineman as well as earned All-District honors in the Fall of 1998 and 1999. Michael was also recognized as an All-Region performer in 1999. In the Winter seasons, Michael played JV basketball his 9th grade year and was a Varsity letter winner his 10th grade year. In Michael’s 11th and 12th grade years he moved over to the wrestling team and was a two-year letter winner in the heavyweight division. Michael was also an accomplished pitcher and catcher on the diamond for RCHS and was a 4-year letter winner in baseball. After his time at RCHS, Michael accepted an athletic scholarship to play football for Furman University in Greenville, SC. Michael was on the NCAA national runner-up team in 2001 and was a 2-time Southern Conference winner in 2001 and 2004. Michael was a three-year starter at Nose Guard and was selected as First Team All-Southern Conference in 2003. He was voted Most Valuable Defensive Player versus Clemson University in 2003 as well as team Most Valuable Defensive Lineman in 2003. In 2004, Michael was picked 2nd Team Preseason All-American before his career ended with a knee injury in the second game of his Senior campaign. Michael was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and graduated with a double major in Political Science and History in 2005. Currently Michael resides in Fairfax Station with his wife Alycia and their son Collin, and daughter Carly.

Andy Cline

Football and Basketball
While at RCHS, Andy played football and basketball. During his football career Andy was voted team Captain in 1993 and was part of the first district championship football team here at RCHS. He earned All-District recognition as a linebacker in the 1992 and 1993 seasons as well as All-District tight end in 1993. Andy was also recognized as an All-Region and All-State linebacker in the Fall of 1993. After his time at RCHS, Andy played football at Bridgewater College for 2 years before his career was cut short due to a neck injury. After his playing days at Bridgewater, Andy came back to RCHS to begin his coaching career in the Fall of 1996, while finishing his college degree. He would stay on the staff here at RCHS through the 2004 season. In 2005, Andy continued his coaching career at Buffalo Gap High School, and was the Defensive Coordinator on the 2007 state championship team. Andy would serve as the head coach at Buffalo Gap High School from 2011-2018. He would lead the Bison to a Region Championship in 2015 and a spot in the state semifinals. Andy still currently teaches at Buffalo Gap High School. Andy and his wife Penny have 2 children, a daughter Ava, and a son Cooper.

Lacrosse
While at RCHS, Kelly participated on the Academic, JV basketball, cross-country, indoor track, swim, and lacrosse teams. In cross-country, she was voted a team captain and was a VHSL All-State performer with a third place finish. In lacrosse, Kelly was voted a team captain and was part of three region championship teams, losing twice in the state championship game, once in overtime to Woodson. She was a member of the high school Academic All-American team in lacrosse as well as a Wendy’s Virginia High School selection. Kelly was voted Outstanding Female Athlete of her senior class in 2003. After RCHS, Kelly attended Washington and Lee University and was a member of the women’s lacrosse team. During her playing career at W & L, she was voted Co-Captain while also earning All-ODAC honors. She finished her college career 6th all-time in assists. As a student, Kelly majored in business journalism, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She was co-editor of the student newspaper and was inducted into ODK (Omicron Delta Kappa). Upon graduation Kelly was awarded a post-graduate internship with the Wall Street Journal, became a staff reporter and authored the “Ahead of the Tape” column. She joined CNBC in 2012 co-anchoring “Worldwide Exchange” in London. She returned to the United States to co-anchor “Closing Bell” and now hosts the afternoon show “The Exchange”. Kelly and her husband, Eric have four children and are expecting their fifth in January. They reside in Ridgewood, NJ.

Katherine Flint

Softball, Lacrosse, and Basketball
While at RCHS, Katherine was a three-sport athlete in high school, playing softball, lacrosse, and basketball. However, basketball is where she truly excelled and left her mark here at RCHS. During her four years, Katherine was named MVP, Best-Offensive, and Best-Defensive player on the team, as well as earning All-District recognition. Katherine was the first noted female to reach the 1,000-point mark while wearing the Wildcat uniform. After her time at RCHS, Katherine was able to take her talents to Shenandoah University and continue her basketball career. While in college, she would receive All-Southern Conference honors and become part of the 1,000-point club there as well. Her senior year, she led her team in scoring, assists, and steals, and was named Outstanding Female Athlete for the University in 2010. Katherine still holds records as the 3rd all-time leader in assists and steals for Shenandoah. After graduation, Katherine would expand her career and travel to Italy to play semi-pro basketball. Once her playing days were over Katherine would return to Rockbridge County to coach the Lady Wildcats for two seasons, first as an assistant and then as head coach. Currently, Katherine works as a Special Education teacher at Hough High School in Charlotte, NC where she also continues her coaching career.

Peter Shaner

Peter Shaner, Class of 2014
Golf and Tennis
While at RCHS, Peter was a multi-sport athlete, who competed in golf and tennis throughout his high school career. He was a part of teams that won 3 district championships in tennis, and 2 district championships and a region championship in golf. Individually Peter won multiple regular season golf tournaments and competed in 3 straight state championships in golf twice as an individual and once as a team. In his senior year Peter won Conference 31 Player of the Year honors in golf and was runner up Conference Player of the Year in tennis. He would also win the district doubles championship in tennis alongside doubles partner (Ben Ritter). After his time at RCHS, Peter continued his athletic career in college playing for 4 years at Randolph-Macon College where he was an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (scholar athlete). Peter was a regular contributor in the starting lineup during his four years at Randolph-Macon on teams that were consistently competing near the top of the conference. Peter accomplished these athletic endeavors while maintaining excellence in the classroom and pursuing a call to ministry; where he is now serving and training to be a pastor in Clemson, South Carolina. Residing in Clemson with Peter are his wife, Sam, and baby girl Harper.

Greg Stubblefield

Baseball and Football
While at RCHS, Greg Stubblefield was a four-year standout athlete in baseball and football. During his baseball career, he earned first-team All-District recognition honors his sophomore, junior and senior years and was named the 1995 Blue Ridge District Player of the Year. Greg also was a three-time All-Region selection those same years and was named to the first-team All-Timesland team. In football, he was a first-team All-District and second-team All-Region performer his junior and senior year in the Fall of 1994 and 1995. Greg was named the News Gazette’s Offensive Player of the Year and the RCHS Male Athlete of the Year his senior year. After his time at RCHS, Greg went on to play baseball at Ferrum College from 1996-2000, where he was a four-year starter and Captain his junior and senior season. He earned first-team USA South All-Conference and Academic All-Conference as a senior and led his team to the 1999 USA South Conference Championship. Greg and his wife Angie have two children, daughters Maddie and Olivia.

David Miller
David Miller, Coach
Coach David “Weenie” Miller started coaching football and basketball at Natural Bridge High School in the late 1980s and came to RCHS in year one, 1992, as an assistant football and basketball coach and became the boys head tennis coach the following spring. He was on the football staff that won the school’s first district championship in 1993 and became head boys’ basketball coach in 1997. The boys’ tennis team won several Blue Ridge District championships, and he was named coach of the year several times. He also had a few players move on to play college tennis.
Coach Miller became the school’s athletic director in 2004 and, in his last year as AD, he was named the Valley District and Region III Administrator of the Year. After some successful years as AD, Coach Miller stepped back into coaching working as an assistant basketball coach with a team that won the district championship, and he took over the RCHS golf program.
The Wildcat golf team has won multiple Blue Ridge and Valley District championships under his watch and also several Region III championships. The Wildcats have qualified for the state tournament either as a full team (four times) or individually every year he has coached. The team’s best finish was state runner-up in 2017. Miller has also had numerous players named to the all-state team and has had players go on to play Division 1, II and III college golf.
