Mr. Haywood Hand
Haywood M. Hand, Jr., is Assistant Superintendent of Rockbridge County Public Schools. He has served in four different school districts during the span of 29 years in many capacities, most recently as principal of Rockbridge County High School. Mr. Hand earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from James Madison University from 1979-1986. He returned to the classroom in 2002 and completed a second master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Lynchburg College in 2004. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Hand began his doctoral studies in Organizational Leadership at Shenandoah University in 2007 and completed his doctoral coursework in 2010. Mr. Hand has experience as a teacher, coach, athletic director, assistant principal, principal, and supervisor of secondary education. He has been married 34 years to his lovely wife, Kimberly. They have two grown children who are married, Brennan and Danielle Hand, and Peter and Logan Melchione. The family enjoys spending time together with their first grandchild, McKynlee, as well as spending time on the sandy shores of Myrtle Beach. The Hand’s also enjoy exercising, reading, playing with their golden retriever (Maddie), engaging in community service, and landscaping.
